What
student-athletes (players) should know about the recruiting process in
Europe
Since a few years, clubs in Europe also offer the possibility to
players to combine basketball and education. Teams are connected to
Universities and they also have possibilities to put you into different
schools where you can get a good education.
If you are interested, you need to either speak the language of the
country you would like to go to or English to enter one of the
international schools or Universties. SAT or Toefel is not requested in
Europe.
All you need is your high school diploma and some schools invite you for
a sign up test.
As a young player you should always
have a school dregree before you decide
to only play basketball. Too many players get hurt and then they end up
with nothing in your hand. Once you are hurt, it´s too late to ask the
team to help you go to University or get another education.
What
student-athletes (players) should know about the recruiting process and
college hoops in the USA and Canada
-
The combination of academics and sport is most
likely the best in the world.
- You will need 12 years of high school.
- You are not the only one being recruited! Stay
realistic about your chances.
Have alternate plans ready.
- Different
leagues have different rules. The best known league is the NCAA.
But
there is also NAIA who give scholarships. It´s just another league.
The education
you get there is the same as the NCAA schools. NCAA doesn´t
say anything about the academic quality of the school, NCAA
only speaks for the
sports. NCAA and NAIA are 4 year schools, with the opportunity to red-shirt one
year, which means not to play one year, just practise and
study.
You red-shirt if you are hurt or if you need some more
academic grades
to qualify.
- You can also start
at a 2 year school. These schools are called Junior College or
Community
College. After 2 years you can transfer to a 4 year school. You will
transfer
over the 2 years which you have already done.
- When you are in your final year of high
school, coaches can contact you by mail (unlimited), e-mail (unlimited),
messengers -like MSN or Yahoo- (unlimited) and by phone (once a week).
They can only speak to you IN PERSON on dates as assigned by the NCAA
(the organization over the college sports). They can come and watch you
play, but still NOT talk to you on certain occasions.
As long as you are NOT in your final year of high school, coaches can
only send you mail the old fashioned way (letters etc). NCAA
rule, doesn´t count for NAIA and 2 year schools.
NCAA
coaches are only allowed to speak with you, your family or coach at
certain times. They
are not allowed to stay in the same hotel.
-
You can ALWAYS contact the coaches without ANY limitation.
-
Coaches can not give you any gifts (T-shirts,
hats, meals, money, drinks etc.). If you accept these, you are violating
NCAA rules and in the worst case, you might not be allowed to play
college basketball.
They can give you information on the school, its studies and the team,
but NO video tapes on the team.
- Without passing your high school exam and
passing the SAT (and sometimes TOEFL) you will never be allowed to play
college basketball. SAT is necessary in all programms.
-
The Clearinghouse (an NCAA division) will
finally decide about your eligibility to play collegiate basketball. Get
GREAT grades in high school!!
- AFTER you took the SAT, schools are allowed to
fly you in on the university´s costs for an ´official visit´. The
schools will pay for your flights, the transportation from and back to
the airport, housing and food. This visit however may not last longer
than 48 hours!
For Europeans this mostly means (example) leave on a Friday morning
local time, arrive in the USA Friday afternoon local time, leave Sunday
afternoon local time and return back home on Monday morning local time.
You are allowed to visit 5 Universities, NO MORE! Schools are also on a
limit
- You sign a ´letter of intent´ to attend that
University. The scholarships are not automatically for 4 years, but will
have to be renewed each year. In general however, a school makes the
commitment to you for 4 years, as well as that you make a commitment to
that school for 4 years.
- School starts mid-August. Basketball practices
start mid-October. In that period you will have daily weight lifting and
conditioning sessions (sometimes at 5:30, before classes do start ...)
and twice a week for about 45 minutes you can have so called
´individuals´, a practice conducted by a coach in a group of maximum 4
players. Until mid-October there are no team practices allowed! You can
always go shoot or work out by yourself, or you can go scrimmage with
your team mates, but never under a coach´s supervision.
During the season (so after mid October until your final game) you can
have 20 hours of practice per week, including weight lifting etc. This
is an NCAA rule and goes for all universities. There will always be 1
NON-basketball day per week!
- In general a university plays 27 games between
November and March. If your school qualifies for a post season
tournament, there can be a few more. This number of games is a lot less
than in Europe.
- After your final game, basketball team
practices stop. There will be weight lifting and individuals (still, 2
per week).
-
You need to have good grades in school. If
your grades are poor, you are not allowed to play.
-
In general coaches want (and need to) win. It
is a very competitive and tough environment. Therefore, your individual
development will not be the center of focus.
Count on strict rules, curfew, discipline.
It is a lot different from Europe.
